Heritage Week 2019

Heritage Week in Geashill is starting to become known for having pretty interesting events and this year was certainly one to remember! Local historian Clemens von Ow launched his second public interest book entitled "Lettice, Baroness Offaly & The Siege of Geashill".

If you haven't already we really recommend you buy a copy, available from our local shop or Offaly Historical Society. Apart from the fact that it is a true story straight out of Game of Thrones, proceeds from the book are going to our local National School, Geashill N.S.

Without giving away too much of the story (buy the book!) the heroine of the hour is Lettice, Baroness Offaly and wife of the first Lord Digby. Its a fascinating, exciting, true story that took place right here in our village.

Of course, it wasn't just an ordinary book launch! Some of our Tidy Towns Volunteers along with local kids from the school took part in a live reenactment, playing the roles of Lettice Baroness Offaly, and her 2 O'Dempsey cousins.

It was SO much fun and the packed audience seemed to really enjoy it. Super work from the narrator (Clemens) and children also! There was even a very realistic looking cannon!

After this reenactment Dr Jane Maxwell of TCD gave a fascinating talk, a great way to end a very enjoyable evening!

We were delighted to be a part of this event and would highly recommend Clemens book, remember all proceeds go to Geashill National School!.
